THURSDAY October 8: Another explosion in Lagos State has been reported. A gas station exploded in the Baruwa area of Ipaja in Lagos State at about 6.am on Thursday.
The explosion was reportedly emanated from the Best Roof Cooking Gas in Baruwa. It caused a huge fire that has destroyed many properties.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said that five persons were killed in the blast. Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, who is the Acting Zonal Coordinator, South West Zonal Office of NEMA, later confirmed this in an interview with newsmen in Lagos. He also said that three persons have been rescued.
Mr. Farinloye said the incident occurred when a Liquefied Petroleum Gas tanker was in the process of discharging at the Best Roof Gas Plant Station.
He told newsmen: “Unfortunately, the gas station had its generator on and it triggered an explosion. The explosion threw the discharging tanker across the road. There are casualties. Five bodies have been recovered but search and recovery will be carried out after the emergency phase.
“Many buildings have been destroyed because the station is located within a densely populated community.”
Lagos State Government’s Reaction
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the incident as a sad memory in the life of the administration.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said the preliminary and final reports on the cause of the explosion suggested negligence on the part of the gas plant operators. He further noted that the government would take stiffer measures against operators of gas plants and/or any combustible items in the State. This measure is to avoid future recurrence of such disaster.
Disaster assessment conducted by the Lagos State Emergency Agency reveal there were five Fatalities, eight casualties with major burns. These casualties have been transferred to the Gbagada General Hospital Burns Unit. Up to 25 houses were damaged, 16 Shops destroyed by the fire, along with 1 Private Primary School and a Hotel. 3 Vehicles were also affected, which included a pickup truck, tricycle and a motorcycle.

This is yet another explosion in Lagos State in recent months. In July 28, two people died in a gas explosion that occurred at Asa Afariogun, Isolo Lagos. The gas explosion emanated from a gas refilling shop. On September 24, a gas tanker reportedly exploded in the Ajuwon area of Iju-ishaga road in Lagos State.
