To the average home-grown African, there are few things as exciting as a well-cooked home food. Relishing the taste of delightful meal after a hard day’s work can be very refreshing. Within the hundred of tribes in Nigeria are healthy foods peculiar to each region. This article will highlight the healthy foods of Rivers and Bayelsa States in the Niger-Delta region.

Nigerian Cuisine

Traditionally, the delicacies of the various regions in Nigeria feature a variety of foods and spices local to their region. A study on the quality of foods has found that West African diet is healthier than the diets of many other places on the planet.

Typical Nigerian meals are made from starchy foods, and they contain meat, fish, seafoods as well as various spices and herbs. Foods eaten within the Niger Delta region feature these, and other food items as well. These foods are very popular not only in that region, but also in the whole of Nigeria’s southern region.

Some Rivers State Dishes

NATIVE SOUP – A healthy native dish popular among the Kalabari and Okirika people of Rivers State. This dish is very rich and expensive to prepare, because it contains lots of sea foods. Included in this soup are fish, prawns, crab, crayfish, oyster, periwinkles and a whole lot more. This soup is eaten with garri, pounded yam, wheat and fufu.

BOLE (Roasted Plantain Meal) – Regarded by the Rivers people as the easiest meal especially during lunch break at work or after a stressful afternoon. It is mostly bought from vendors who put up their barbecue stand by the road side. The food is a combination of roasted plantain or yam and roasted fish. It is mostly eaten with a spicy palm oil stew.

ONUNU – Here is another native meal popular among the Kalabari and Okirika people. This meal is their native dish and it is prepared with boiled yam, very ripe plantain and oil. The combination would be put into a mortar and pounded together. Onunu can be eaten with either pepper soup, stew or any other sauce.
