It is so disheartening anytime you hear about people who are killed for no reason at all – by fellow humans! Just this past weekend, the news broke of scores of rice farmers executed in Borno State. And every day, we get to hear about assassinations of innocent people different reasons. It always makes me very sad every time I read about how people no longer consider human lives as sacred. For many, human lives have become valueless!
People born in past centuries before this era would be shocked at how valueless human lives have become. It was shocking news then whenever someone gets killed even by mistake or in self defense. Newspaper vendors would make huge sales as the details of the reported death is published in the tabloids. But now, people are hardly shocked about news reports on killings of innocent people – except if a loved one is affected. Such news have become so common that they are no longer shocking to the ears. So sad indeed!

Many experts believe that there are a host of factors and circumstances that moves people to commit irrational, violent acts. A report published by the FBI Academy in the United States says: “Homicide is not the act of a sober, sane, individual.” For some reason the thinking of those committing senseless crimes is not normal. Some come from broken families, while some are acting on behalf of hate groups or cults.
Regular exposure to violence depicted on television and on the Internet is another factor. There’s also the influence of drugs and other synthetic substances. But whatever their problem is, some become so consumed by their difficulty that their thinking is altered, and this can lead them to commit strange acts.
A nurse who abnormally craved attention injected little children with a drug that caused their breathing to stop. Then she basked in the attention she was given as she “saved” each child. Unfortunately, she was not able to get them all to resume breathing. She was convicted of murder.
Which Way For Humanity?
Although we may be born with certain wrong inclinations, violent behavior is usually learned. In the same way, we can learn to be peaceable, not allowing the desire to kill develop in us. Love for others should be the motivating factor not to kill.
“Continue to love your enemies and to pray for those who persecute you, so that you may prove yourselves sons of your Father.“Matthew 5:44-45
