As the clock ticked on Thursday, December 31, 2020, you could feel the subdued excitement of people everywhere you go. Everyone was excited that they have survived the year 2020, after all that Nigerians and the rest of the world experienced. When the clock eventually struck 00:00 that night, sounds of cheers and fire crackers could be heard far into the morning. I am sure everyone is expecting to have a better year than what we all experienced in 2020. But what positive changes are you expecting in 2021?!
When the world moved into 2020, I don’t imagine anyone would have anticipated what eventually happened. In fact, so-called “prophets” and “men of God” where predicting that 2020 will be a year of “breakthroughs” and “successes.” However, what everyone witnessed and/or experienced is beyond any human imagination. The whole practically came to a standstill.
Highpoints of 2020
Whenever the year 2020 is referred to in the future, it can only be summarized in one word: COVID-19. After it began in China late 2019, the disease simply spread faster than anyone could have imagined. The World Health Organization announced to the world about the disease early January 2020. Before long, it began to spread around the globe, and the world simply shut down.
As the pandemic spread to virtually every country in the globe, the consequences became more and more evident. Some countries were slow to take action to protect its citizens until they began to record positive cases. Eventually, every country started to take action, enforcing the wearing of face masks and keeping a social distance.
The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic took everyone by surprise, pushing oil prices to a new low, as per OECD. As the disease spread, the economic damage became evident and represents the largest economic shock the world has experienced in decades. Before long, many companies shut down, and millions lost their means of livelihood. As expected, the world’s economy slid into its deepest global recession in decades, despite the extraordinary efforts of governments to counter it.
The global outbreak of COVID–19 has resulted in closure of gyms, stadiums, pools, dance and fitness studios, physiotherapy centres, parks and playgrounds. Many individuals are therefore not able to actively participate in their regular individual or group sporting activities.
How has the pandemic impacted Nigeria? What positive changes are you expecting in 2021?

Impact of COVID-19 on Nigeria
In the past, a new year meant new resolutions and a fresh start. With the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic still being felt all over the world, Nigeria and its citizens are feeling the impact. Already, many Nigerians are thinking of or have accepted that they won’t have any new year’s resolutions. And millions are experiencing a level of depression and anxiety that they have not felt before. As a matter of fact, billions of people around the globe are in the same situation.
The situation in Africa – including Nigeria – is really heart wrenching. Covid-19 pandemic has had a devastating impact on the socioeconomic well-being of Nigerians. With many Nigerians made unemployed by COVID-19, combined with lower volumes of exports such as oil, Nigeria’s economy contracted by 6.1% in the second quarter of 2020. According to WeForum, up to 27% of Nigeria’s labor force (over 21 million Nigerians) are now unemployed.
There are available solutions for Nigeria’s rising unemployment rate. Opportunities abound for these unemployed persons to develop themselves so as to become business owners. It is disturbing that most people in Nigeria are not willing to put in extra effort to improve their finances. They are either looking to get a job, waiting to be helped by a relative/friend, or expecting a “miracle” from heaven. So what positive changes are you expecting in 2021?
If you are looking for a job during this pandemic era, you can be sure that it may never come. Waiting to receive help from a relative may even take longer than you expect. The best option for these job seekers is to seek for alternative means to earn a living. As far as this pandemic period goes, the most lucrative businesses have been the internet-based businesses. It is true that they can be somewhat difficult, but millions are succeeding through hard work and persistence.
With the impact of the COVID-19 most likely to continue well into 2021, now is the time to be proactive. There are many online businesses anyone can do with just a mobile phone and internet connection. Instead of wasting time switching from social media site to another, why not use your time productively to develop yourself and better your future.
Before now, I didn’t believe that I can be able to do any business online. However, after coming in contact with seasoned coaches like Toyin Omotosho and Stallone Obaraemi Samuel, I’m now learning how to earn a living from affiliate marketing and email marketing. The internet is going nowhere in the near future, and millions are now taking their businesses to the online market place. Why not take advantage of this opportunity now as part of your new year resolution? I bet you won’t be disappointed, as long as you are willing to work hard and be patient. What positive changes are you expecting in 2021 that will be greater than this?
